Doble family collection, 1854-1910.

The collection contains letters of Erastus Doble written between 1861 and 1864 while he was serving in the 8th Maine Regiment during the Civil War. Written primarily from places in South Carolina, the letters describe his impressions of the southern troops, camp life and his surroundings. Also included are photographs of Doble and others, his pension certificate, a bible presented to him in 1858 as a New Year's gift from his sister Vesta A. Doble, and a notebook inscribed: Hosea Doble, presented to his nephew Erastus Doble by his widow Cynthia. The notebook belonging to Hosea Doble contains his accounts as a carpenter from 1870 to 1874. The latter part of the notebook contains minutes of the annual reunions of Company B of the 8th Maine Infantry Regiment from 1879 to 1888. Erastus Doble was secretary of the organization. Laid in the notebook is a campaign ribbon for James G. Blaine for president and John A. Logan for vice-president. A Doble family register, documents about the death of Erastus Doble, and a miniature Webster dictionary inscribed to Norma White, May 1, 1910, are also contained in the collection.
